communicating with the other bees. Because of his differences, he sometimes
has trouble doing the work in the same way that the other bees do and he is
often made to feel the outcast of the hive that he lives in. When Benny
struggles to keep up with the noise and the complicated rhythms of the other
bees he is yelled at by the Queen Bee and is teased by the majority of the other
bees in the hive.
His only friend in the hive is the Queen’s daughter, Bailey, and she tries to
make the other bees understand that although Benny buzzes differently than
everyone else, he wants to be an active and vital part of the hive. When
frustration finally builds in Benny to the point that he feels his only viable option
is to run away, he leaves all alone and finds his way to a meadow filled with
flowers.
Soon, we see the arrival of Dr. Burt Bumbler, an important scientist in the
hive who is out doing research on pollination of the flowers. Dr. Bumbler is a bit
odd, which he readily acknowledges and as he tells Benny “It’s perfectly
acceptable to be exactly who you are.” Dr. Bumbler becomes a mentor to
Benny and helps him find a fun way to communicate through movement.
Despite Benny’s reluctance, Dr. Bumbler convinces Benny to return with him to
the hive and there, overlooking the hive, they watch as the bees struggle to
keep up with the work. When the Queen confronts the bees about their
troubles, they tell her that they need Benny and admit that he did serve as an
important member of the hive. Benny returns to the hive, and he and Dr.
Bumbler teach all the bees, including the Queen, his special new way of
communicating. As the story draws to a close, all the bees discover that they
all have unique strengths and abilities that are important parts of the hive.
