Johnny Appleseed Day!
Johnny Appleseed was a legendary American who planted and supplied apple trees to much of the United States of America. Many people think that Johnny Appleseed was a fictional character, but he was a real person.
Johnny was a skilled nurseryman who grew trees and supplied apple seeds to the pioneers in the mid-western USA. Appleseed gave away and sold many trees. He owned many nurseries in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana, where he grew his beloved apple trees. Although he was a very successful man, Appleseed lived a simple life.
It is said that as Johnny traveled, he wore his cooking pot on his head as a hat!
Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on September 26, 1774. His real name was John Chapman, but he was called Johnny Appleseed because of his love for growing apple trees.
Johnny died at the age of 70; he is buried in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He had spent 50 years growing apple trees and traveling to spread his precious trees around his country.

Kindergarten Targeted Services After-School Program
Targeted Services is a state-funded program that serves students in grades K-5 in extended day and summer programs. Albert Lea’s program is designed to build skills in reading, math and writing, as well as help students develop better organizational and social skills. The learning environment is active and hands-on with a low student to teacher ratio.
To qualify students must be performing below grade level in reading, math, or writing. Students who would benefit from social emotional education may also be eligible for the program, however not all students qualify. If you are not sure if your child qualifies please contact me (Mrs. Leach).
Attendance in Targeted Services Programs has been shown to help students be more successful in school. There is no cost to attend classes, but we request consistent attendance for the best benefit of the student. Staffing is determined by the number of qualified students registered and Albert Lea Schools are reimbursed by the student attendance. Bussing is available for students who do not live within walking distance from the school. Bus schedule information will be sent home prior to the start of the program.
Targeted Services program goals: Targeted Services programs provide academic services to complement current school programming. These services strive to:
· Support methods and instructional strategies that are effective in strengthening the core curriculum
· Increase critical reading skills, strategies and comprehension
· Encourage reading for enjoyment
· Build basic skill areas: reading, math, and other academic areas
· Promoting self concept and increasing motivation

Never Talk to Strangers
One of the things that we are learning about this week is strangers. See the list of rules that we came up with and review them with your child at home.
1. Always stay with your parents or babysitter. If they tell you to stay in the front yard then stay in the front yard.
2. If a stranger approaches you, back away. If the stranger comes closer, run away and yell, "I don't know you. You're a stranger."
3. Never go anywhere with a stranger even if they try and give you a treat or candy.
4. If you are lost and you need to talk to a stranger find a mom with kids or someone at a cash register.
5. Talk to your parents about how to answer the phone when they are not home.
Bus Safety
The Albert Lea Bus company came and talked to students about bus safety today (Monday, September 19th). Students learned how to get on and off the bus-hold the railing, learned where the danger zone is around the bus (have to stand 10 feet away so bus driver can see them), how to evacuate the bus if there was ever an emergency and they needed to get off, and many other safety rules about riding the bus. After the bus company left all of the kindergarteners took a quiz to check their understanding of the bus procedures.
