Sight Word Activities at Home...
Activities to Help Your
Child Practice and Learn Sight Words
Sight Word
Activities:
·
Have your child write sight
words with glitter glue, wikki stix, playdoh, and puffy paint
·
Put craft sand or rice on a
paper plate. Have your child practice tracing sight words.
·
Put hair gel in a zip lock
baggie. Seal the baggie. Have your child write the letters of the sight word in
the gel.
·
Squirt shaving cream on a
plate or table. Spread the cream. Have your child write the sight words in the
shaving cream.
·
Jump, hop, clap, tap out the
letters of the sight word (t-h-e “the”).
Sight word games:
·
Make sight word flashcards on
3 x 5 index cards and place them on a ring. Short and frequent practice with
naming the words works better than longer sessions. Try reviewing the cards
during commercial breaks.
·
Draw a star on the back of a 3
x 5 index card. Place this card and the flash-cards face down on the table.
Take turns turning over a card and reading the words. Try to be the player who
finds the card with a star.
·
Play “Slap Jack” with the
sight word and star cards. When the star card is turned over, the first player
to slap it wins.
·
Make duplicates of the sight
word cards and play the memory game.
·
Write the sight words on
sticky notes and place them on a wall. Turn down the lights and give your child
a flashlight. ave your child shine the light on the words and read them out
loud.
Letter Coming Home Today
Sight words are a group of very common words that
good readers recognize instantly and automatically. Many of the sight words cannot be “sounded
out” and they need to be learned by “sight”.
Because recognizing these words is so important during reading, using a
variety of activities to teach, practice and memorize the words is critical in
teaching children to read.
We are working hard on learning sight words in kindergarten. We will focus on a few sight words a week. At the beginning of each week a list will come home with the sight words for the week. Please help your child practice reading and writing the sight words each week.

your child learn and practice their sight words at home.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
Please practice the kindergarten sight words with your child at home. If you lost your set of sight words please let me know and I will send home a new set. We are/have been working on the following words:

Your child needs to recgonize they words automatically (within 3 seconds). They should not be sounding them out.
Guided Reading Groups
We are back to our regular guided reading groups schedule. Your child will be bringing home 3-5 books a week to practice reading to you at home. Please make sure they bring the book back to school the next day. If your child does not bring a book home it is becasue they have not returned a previous book to me. I will not send home books with your child until they return the lost book. Please contact me if you have questions.

Please send a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter to school in a ziploc bag with your child's name on it. We are learning about the name and value of coins and having the real thing vs. pretend coins makes such a difference. Thank you so much!
