We learned about the letter E...

Here is an example of the letter E project we did today.  The letter E is several envelopes.  There is also pictures of an eggplant, egg, elbow, and an exit sign.  Have your child go on a letter E hunt next time you are at the grocery store and see how many things they can find that begin with the letter E.  Don't forget to ask them to write the uppercase and lowercase E and tell you what sound the E makes.

Estimation

We are talking about estimation in math.  Students learned that when they estimate they have to "think" and "make a smart guess."  We estimated how many pieces of candy corn were in the container on the right.  We talked about how there were 10 candy corns in the left container and how we knew there were more candy corns in the container on the right.  Tomorrow, students will find out if their estimate was close or far off.

What is a data notebook?

Data notebooks are an important part of your students' learning. Data notebooks are tools used by kindergarten students to set and help to achieve academic and personal goals. The notebooks will be used at conferences for parents to see their child's progress and for students to track their progress on a monthly basis.

Letter N

We have spent the last two days talking about the letter N.  We have worked on recognizing the upper/lowercase letter, writing the upper/lowercase letter, worked on words that begin with that letter, and the sound that the letter D makes. Here is the letter D page that the students made today of things that begin with the letter D. Ask your child what sound the letter D makes and ask them to tell you things that begin with the letter D.

Number Memory during Math

Students learned how to play memory today.  They used the numbers 2-10 in the deck of cards and matched all the black numbers and all of the red numbers.

Tip: Try playing this game at home as a family.  If you need a deck of cards let me know and I would be happy to send a deck home with your child.

Mrs. Nielsen...

Mrs. Nielsen has been visiting our room once a week to work with the kindergarteners on social skills.  This week she came and talked to us about conflict and resolution.  Mrs. Nielsen and I role played about a student getting upset at another student for not wanting to play their game.  Students learned that a conflict is when there is a problem and the resolution is how we fix the problem.  Mrs. Nielsen taught the students the acronym STP.  S stands for STOP, T stands for THINK, and P stands for PICK A PLAN.  We can't wait for Mrs. Nielsen to come back next week and work with us some more.

Sequencing Numbers 0-31

Kindergarteners worked in partners today to sequence numbers 0-31.  Check out some of the great teamwork they did!  I will be sending home number flashcards in the next few days.  Cut them out for your child and have them work on sequencing their numbers.

Ella and Joe working hard!

Dani and Selene taking turns.

Gabryela and Eric sorting with milk caps.

Brandon and Olivia sorting their milk caps.

Here is an example of the finished product. Notice that numbers 0-9 are on top, followed by the teen numbers, numbers in the twenty, and numbers in the thirties.  Have your child practice sequencing numbers at home and telling you the numbers as they go.

Sorry that it is sideway (it would not rotate for some reason).

Alphabet Flashcards

I am sending home alphabet flashcards in student folders today.  There is a set of uppercase and a set of lowercase. Please cut them out and spend a few minutes a night practicing letter names and sounds with your child.  You can also make it into a memory game by turning them upside down and having students match the uppercase with the lowercase letter.
