V-Day Boxes/Valentine's for Friends

Make Your Own Valentine’s Box
Please make a homemade Valentine mailbox with your child to bring to school.  Start with a shoebox or Kleenex box, and then use your imagination to create a Valentine box.  You might use wrapping paper, construction paper, wallpaper scraps, fabric, craft foam, or a paper bag to cover the box.  Decorate with stickers, glitter, paint pens, pom poms, lace, doilies, flowers, or valentine cards.
Bring your Valentine’s  and Valentine boxes to school on Friday, February 10th, 2012.  On Tuesday, February 14th, 2012 students will put Valentine’s in each other’s boxes during the party and then open and look through their boxes.

100th Day of School

Dear kindergarten families,
Since kindergarten began, we have been counting the days of school.  We will celebrate our 100th day of kindergarten on Monday, February 13!  Part of our celebration is creating our own 100 collections.  Please help your child find 100 related items that he or she can glue, tape, staple, or draw on the attached number grid.
Some ideas to get you started:
·         100 stickers
·         100 buttons
·         100 cotton balls
·         100 dots made by markers
·         100 pieces of pasta
Be creative!  You can use anything you can stick to this grid!  (just note, pennies are a fun project, but they tend to fall off easily because of their heavy weight.  If you choose pennies or any other heavy item, I recommend covering the entire project with strips of mailing tape.  Some heavy projects may need a piece of cardboard on the back for support.)
Please return the 100 collections chart by Thursday, February 9, so we can display the collections in our room.
Thank you and Have Fun!

Reading Rocks and Math Rolls Assembly...

On Thursday, January 5, Mrs. Sandi Sorenson and her fourth graders entertained Hawthorne students with a delightful skit based on The Popcorn Book by Tomie de Paola.  This is a non-fiction book that presents a variety of facts about popcorn.  Threaded throughout the skit were facts and concepts about math.  The reading strategy of questioning was illustrated by the students, who asked questions of their audience before, during, and after the skit.  The fourth graders had an interesting stage and set of props including a fire (a box fan with read crepe paper being blown out),  a cave, a cornfield, and a kitchen filled with the tools to make popcorn!
